Meet the Gypsies

Fred Norquist

Fred is GFred is pretty G, but I’m not referring to his cash fan or grill – the G stands for gypsy. Norquist loves kayaking so much that when his new kayak comes he cuddles it and when all the rivers drop out he watches kayak movies until he can’t take the jonesin’ anymore. Oh yeah, and when there are rivers running its pretty apparent why his pseudonym is Shred the Gnarquest, because that is what he is doing. Fred has run multiple waterfalls over 70ft tall and taken a two month kayak adventure to Chile. And did I mention he is ski racing convert to big mountain skiing? But besides his propensity to go big Fred makes movies about the adventures of gypsy’s. (Take a look here). Right now he is attending college in the Pacific Northwest where he can kayak all year long. His films are phenomenal and has mastered the art of visually taking you down classic runs. He also likes to work on his car. He goes to school, like math and writing and stuff, but we don’t talk about that.

Jake Sakson

Jake jumpsuit - mulletJake loves pushing the envelope; tearing down mountains on snow, running rivers and I guess sometimes with his goofy outfits and haircuts.   When he first started telemarking he was pretty convinced that people who didn’t telemark didn’t make it to heaven but due to the masses of friends he lost he has toned down his rhetoric a little bit. In his older and wiser years he describes the feeling it gives him better by saying, “What I love about telemarking is the focus and consciousness it requires.” But we just tell him to shut the trap and get in his boat. He is also a river lover like Fred, and these friends have descended a lot of water together. However, his last few summers have been spent working in order to keep his winters free. He has multiple podiums in telemark competitions and strong film segments in the Powderwhore movie the last few years.
